Choosing a Heat Pump for Planet and Pension

Live Net Zero Email Service

Hope Ryckman, Qualicum Beach, British Columbia (2nd Prize Winner: Our Homes)

At 76, living in Qualicum Beach, Hope Ryckman made a decision that required real resolve. A retired widow on a very low income, she chose to install a heat pump in her detached home, even though it meant taking on debt. She shares her home with two cats and two rabbits and is clear about one thing: protecting the planet is her responsibility.

Hope won 2nd Prize in the “Our Homes” category of the 2025 Live Net Zero Household Challenge for showing that climate leadership is not defined by age, income or household size. Her entry clearly outlined her action and motivation, demonstrating that meaningful home energy upgrades are possible even in tight financial circumstances.

Before proceeding, Hope researched how heat pumps work. She learned that they provide both heating and cooling, are highly efficient and can play a significant role in lowering emissions.

“These units reduce greenhouse gas emissions and operate three times more efficiently than electric heating systems,” she explains. “I enjoy that the heat pumps extract heat from the outside air in the winter and bring it into the house for warmth, then reverse the process in the summer. How clever. Now that to me is recycling at its finest.”

When a local company offered a financing option, Hope decided to move forward with the big purchase, knowing that repayment would take time but believing the long-term environmental benefits made it worthwhile.

For Hope, entering the Household Challenge was about speaking up about her “leap of faith” regarding heat pumps. She wanted others to see that climate action is not limited to large households or high incomes. It’s about care, intention and doing what you can in your specific circumstances.

Hope’s entry:

I am a senior on very low yearly income, BUT I still wanted to help myself and the planet by getting a heating system in my house that honoured my beloved Earth & was a bit easier on my pensions. I had heard wonderful things about heat pumps! Thank goodness my local heat pump company offered a financial loan for me to get one & though it will take me a long time to pay it down, I felt it best for all these following reasons. I know from researching it, a heat pump is beneficial for my home because it provides efficient heating and cooling with a single system, leading to lower energy use and potential cost savings. I am a protector of my Earth and recycle, reduce and reuse and I love that a heat pump is also an environmentally friendly choice for me, since it doesn’t produce greenhouse gas emissions during operation. So better for my neighbours, my community and for my treasured love of our beautiful planet! #LiveNetZero2025.

Reflections from Hope:

Below, Hope shares why she entered, what motivated her decision and how sustainable living shows up in her daily life.

Why did you enter the Live Net Zero Household Challenge?

To show how much I care for my beautiful planet Earth and how I want to protect it so that it is healthy for many other generations to enjoy its beauty as much as I have. We all have to care and do our bit to help keep it thriving.

What motivated you to install a heat pump?

I was motivated to help the planet by buying a heat pump and installing it. Though as a low-income senior widow, I went into debt to do so. This shows my commitment to protect and help this wonderful planet we live on! We have to cherish it by taking care of it.

What other sustainable actions are part of your life?

I am a 76-year-old woman with a health issue. I make cuts to help the earth, but my van is my transportation to my world – to go to the doctor, to buy groceries – so it is something I have to use. But when I go out for the day, I make it worthwhile by doing many errands together in the same area, so it saves me gas and time rather than going to each errand separately. A few other things I’m doing are composting, recycling, new windows and low-energy appliances.

Has your decision influenced others?

My kids were proud of what I did and are thinking of putting in heat pumps themselves in their house!
