This exceptional experience of western Newfoundland starts with the top day hikes in Gros Morne National Park and combines them with delicious Newfoundland cuisine, comfortable lodging, experienced local guides, and some cultural flair. Walk atop the Earth’s exposed mantle on a rocky Tablelands hike; along the coast and through lush landscapes of the Green Gardens; to spectacular views atop the Lookout Hills, and up to the summit of Gros Morne Mountain. After each solid day of hard hiking, enjoy a hearty dinner and a soft sleep. And, how could we leave out the classic scenery of Western Brook Pond Fjord? The included boat tour takes you into the heart of the glacier-carved, land-locked fjord, past billion-year-old cliffs, and dramatic 2000-foot waterfalls. You’ll quickly discover why you need to spend at least a week in this spectacular park!

Itinerary
- Day 1: Arrive at Deer Lake and transfer to Gros Morne National Park via the stunning “Viking Trail” highway
- Day 2: Hike to the Tablelands, a Mars-like layer of mantle rock that once lay beneath the Earth’s crust and is one of the main reasons for Gros Morne being a UNESCO World Heritage site.
- Day 3: Boat tours, visits to the Lobster Cove Head lighthouse and the Green Point geological site, leisurely walks, explorations of the Western Brook Pond fjord and stunning waterfalls.
- Day 4: Travel to L’Anse aux Meadows, a 1000-year-0ld Viking village and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
- Day 5: Hike the trails on the coast of Iceberg Alley, looking for whales and learning about the culture of this region.
- Day 6: Visits to the Dark Tickle ecomuseum and to Port Au Choix National Historic Site, to look for woodland caribou and .
- Day 7: Head to the Green Gardens trailhead for one of the most diverse and magical hikes in the park, covering everything from the Earth’s mantle of the Tablelands to the boreal forest valley.
- A final breakfast with new friends and transfer to Deer Lake airport for your trip home.
Meet your RCGS Ambassador

George Kourounis has a passion for the world’s extremes. As an explorer, storm chaser, TV presenter, and Explorer-In-Residence with the RCGS, he’s travelled to over 75 countries on all seven continents to document extreme forces of nature so that others can appreciate the power of Mother Nature. For 25 years he has chased tornadoes on the Great Plains, driven into the eye of hurricanes along the Gulf Coast, rappelled deep in the crater of active volcanoes in the Congo & South Pacific, climbed mountains in North Korea, and earned a Guinness World Record for become the first person to set foot at the bottom of the Darvaza flaming gas crater in Turkmenistan while leading an expedition for National Geographic.
Best known for hosting 50 episodes of his own globe-trotting TV series Angry Planet, Kourounis is also a regular on The Science Channel, The Weather Network and countless other networks and video platforms.
“I think that sustainable travel is an integral tool in promoting conservation,” he says. “We are only interested in preserving things that we are care about, and we only care about things that we are exposed to. By visiting a rainforest, a coral reef, or a mountain glacier, we personally connect with the landscapes and wildlife we encounter there and that can create an emotional bond that we keep with us our entire lives.”
