Job title: Features editor

Description

Canadian Geographic is seeking an experienced features editor to join our editorial team in Ottawa. Reporting to the editor-in-chief and working closely with the managing editor and director of brand and creative, the features editor will play a leading role in the production of feature stories and other content for the magazine and web. The features editor commissions and edits freelance contributions and ensures that published stories read well and are visually appealing, consulting with the art department on photo selection and the design of feature layouts. The features editor has a strong understanding of Canadian Geographic’s tone, audience and editorial priorities and ensures stories align with the publication’s values and mission. The features editor maintains positive relationships with freelancers and works to grow our network of writers, photographers, illustrators and other contributors. 

Responsibilities

Assign and edit feature stories and other departments/stories as required
Coordinate fact-checking, copyediting and proofreading of editorial content and assist with photo research/assigning 
Work with the art department on photo selection and the design of feature layouts
Build stories in WordPress CMS for publication on cangeo.ca 
Assist with the development and production of special projects for Canadian Geographic and the Royal Canadian Geographical Society
Build and maintain positive relationships with freelancers and help to grow Can Geo’s network of contributors

Qualifications

Undergraduate or masters degree in journalism, communications or a related field 
A minimum of 5 years of experience working for a consumer publication or custom publisher, ideally in print
Superior writing and editing skills 
Demonstrated understanding of the production process, from assignment to final proof
Experience working to deadline in an upbeat, fast-paced work environment
Strong organizational and time-management skills
Self-motivated personality, flexible, outgoing, capable of functioning with autonomy 
A knowledge and network of freelance contributors
Experience working with Adobe Creative Suite applications
Experience building articles in WordPress
