Students from all over the world are in Quebec this week to test their geographical knowledge and skills at the 15th annual International Geography Olympiad. Organized by the International Geographical Union (IGU), the iGeo is a competition for 16 to 19 year old geography students. Forty-three teams from around the globe will be competing over the course of this week from July 31 to August 6. Students chosen to represent their countries will compete in multiple skill-testing events, including a written test, a multimedia test and substantial fieldwork requiring observation, cartographic representation and geographical analysis.

The event kicked off Tuesday evening with the Opening Ceremony held at Université Laval’s Pavillon Palasis-Prince. Each team proudly paraded their country’s flag as they were introduced. Wednesday, the competitors jumped right in with a written test to start the day and then an excursion to Old Quebec City. Wednesday night, participants will be briefed on the field work exercise which will take place all day Thursday with an analysis to be done on Friday. The field work location has yet to be officially announced.
