A two-week family trip to Europe definitely requires a lightweight luggage set, and the Helix soft-sided three-piece package from Heys, a Canadian company that produced the luggage for the 2016 Canadian Olympic Team, was perfectly suited to our needs.

The trip with my husband and two-year-old son included time in Belgium and a road trip to the Swiss Alps, meaning we needed to pack some specialized clothing and gear. The Helix set, which comes in black (the one we tested), red, blue and charcoal, includes three suitcases: a 2.5-kilogram carry-on (53 cm x 36 cm x 23 cm), a 3.2-kilogram medium-sized suitcase (66 cm x 45 cm x 30 cm) and a 3.6-kilogram large suitcase (76 cm x 48 cm x 33 cm). The great thing about this set is that all of the pieces fit into one another, so you can minimize and expand the set as needed. With the help of the zippered dividers and the numerous pockets, our gear and the gifts we brought home fit surprisingly easy.

Unfortunately, our bags got lost at the Pearson Airport in Toronto and arrived in Brussels three days after we did. We were concerned that after a few days of our luggage being handled, especially since it’s soft-sided, our belongings would be damaged. However when we finally received our luggage, the set looked great and our belongings were kept safe.

When the time came to pack up and fly home, the buckled compression strap inside each of the fully lined pieces and the zipper-released expansion system allowed us to fit all of the extras we brought back. The spinner wheels were a little disappointing compared to our other suitcase, but the Helix set’s lightweight design allowed us to bring back more gifts and goodies than we had expected (Belgian chocolate and toddler toys!). Although there are many black bags circling the carousels at airports, the red piping on the edges of this set made it easy to spot.

All in all, Heys’ lightweight Helix luggage set is durable, well designed and a great pick when you want to be sure all of your souvenirs make it home safely.
