For the first time ever, four senior geography students will be selected through a Canadian Geographic Olympiad to represent their nation at the International Geography Olympiad, to be held in Quebec City in August 2018. There, top 16- to 19-year-old students from around the world will showcase their geography knowledge in an exciting four-day competition.

While the annual Canadian Geographic Challenge has drawn thousands of students in Grades 4 to 10 to compete for the title of top geography student since the 1990s, Canada has never fielded a senior team for the international competition.

“The Geo Olympiad is an exciting opportunity for 16-19-year-old geography students to continue to pursue their passion on the international stage,” says Ellen Curtis, director of Canadian Geographic Education.

The purpose of the Olympiads is not only to test students’ knowledge and understanding of geographic skills and concepts, but to stimulate active interest in geographical and environmental studies among young people, and at the global level facilitate interactions between students from different countries, thereby contributing — even if in a small way — to the understanding between nations.

The written portion of the competition closes at the end of February 2018, at which point the top 20 finalists will move on to the second phase. Team Canada will be announced on May 1, 2018.
