One lucky group of students from Lethbridge Christian School in Alberta has won an all-expenses-paid trip to Nova Scotia. The annual Canada’s Coolest School Trip contest encourages grade 8/secondary 2 students to discover Canada’s national parks.

To win the contest (which is a partnership between Parks Canada, The Royal Canadian Geographical Society, Historica Canada and the Canadian Wildlife Federation) students had to create and promote a one-minute video about a park of their choice and its natural or cultural significance. To honour Canada’s 150th anniversary, they were also asked to highlight what role it played in creating the Canada we know today.

In the Lethbridge Christian School students’ winning video “Waterton The Best in the West”, Lethbridge students focused on the rich biodiversity and history of Waterton Lakes National Park. In 1932, the park became the world’s first International Peace Park when it joined together with the Glacier National Park in the United States, symbolizing the friendship between Canada and its southern neighbour.

Over the course of their trip, students will have the opportunity to explore beautiful natural landscapes while learning about the culture and history of Nova Scotia. They will visit Kejimkujik National Park and National Historic Site, where they will be introduced to Mi’kmaq culture. On a ghost tour of the Halifax Citadel, students will step back in time to the 1800s to learn about the soldiers and families that lived in the fort. Other stops on the trip include a visit to Fort Anne, Canada’s first National Historic Site, and the UNESCO World Heritage and National Historic Site of Grand-Pré.
