There’s a lot of ways to make Canada better known to Canadians. The Royal Canadian Geographical Society is trying as many ways as possible.

While best known for its iconic magazine, Canadian Geographic, the Society also supports expeditions across the country, provides grants and scholarships for geography research, and promotes geographic literacy through a variety of free teacher resources.

Here’s a bit of what the Society got up to in November.

1. Energy IQ giant floor map visits Alberta legislature
   As global climate talks kicked off in Paris, the EnergyIQ giant floor map visited to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta in Edmonton, helping students and MLAs learn about Canadian energy production and transmission
2. Drawn to Victory giant floor map unveiled
   Canadian Geographic Education’s Drawn To Victory giant floor map, which depicts the Western Front and helps teachers put the First World War in context, was presented at an event at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa. A preview of the accompanying documentary film, narrated by Canadian actor and Fellow of The Royal Canadian Geographical Society Dan Aykroyd, was also unveiled.
3. Annual RCGS Fellow’s Dinner
   The Royal Canadian Geographical Society held its annual awards ceremony and Fellows Dinner at the Canadian Museum of History on Wednesday, November 18. Among the night’s many highlights: Margaret Atwood singing an Arrogant Worms song.
4. Charting Change blog launched
   The first post in an ongoing series about innovative projects in the developing world was released. The project is produced in partnership with Canada’s International Development Research Center.
5. Annual photo competition
   The stunning winners of Canadian Geographic’s 30th Annual Photo Competition were announced.
6. December issue of Canadian Geographic
   The annual wildlife issue of Canadian Geographic magazine is now on newsstands. Features stories on Canada’s polar bears, disappearing insects, and Nova Scotia’s wild islands.
7. New rip-proof map of Canada
   Canadian Geographic Education released a new classroom map of Canada and North America, made of a waterproof and tear-resistant synthetic paper. It has been printed and mailed to 15,500 teachers across Canada.
8. RCGS partners with Trans Canada Trail
   The Royal Canadian Geographical Society and the Trans Canada Trail signed a Memorandum of Understanding, which will help each partner work towards the mutual goal of familiarizing Canadians with the landscape outside their doors.
9. Geography Awareness Week
   “Explore! The power of maps” was the theme of Geography Awareness Week 2015, and teachers across Canada joined Canadian Geographic in geographic celebration and discovery. Even the editors of CanGeo made their own personal maps, to show how they view Canada.
10. Geographic education conferences
    Representatives of Canadian Geographic Education had booths at various educational conferences in Canada, including the Ontario Association for Geographic and Environmental Education conference, where RCGS CEO John Geiger was a keynote speaker.
