We probably could have predicted these results.
As you might imagine, we pay close attention to the newsstand sales results of past covers, and from that data we've learned that our audience traditionally favours images of wildlife, ice, and ships, in that order, over other options.
So it's little surprise, I suppose, how these three amazing images shot by Canadian Geographic creative director Javier Frutos during a Februrary 2017 Antarctic cruise with One Ocean Expeditions finished in our cover vote (held each issue to solicit feedback from our followers).
Yes, option one won a clear victory with 47 per cent of the tally, with options two and three nabbing 32 and 21 per cent. The comments from voters on the winner made clear the reason for its superiority, with a vast majority noting they "loved it!" and were captivated by the impactful, eye-catching colours. (Our newsstand sales consultant Scott Bullock was convinced from the outset the penguin would win outright.) And who are we to argue with Bullock AND our audience? Particularly given that the results are in keeping with how past cover images have performed.
