• Readers selected option two as their favourite cover from these three options.

I should have known this day would come: the day participants in Canadian Geographic’s cover vote overwhelmingly choose a favourite image that the magazine staff overrules. Such is the case with the cover of our July/August 2013 issue.

(As regular Canadian Geographic followers know, in advance of each issue’s publication we solicit your feedback to help us choose our cover image.)

Now, presumably, I have some explaining to do. While option two (above middle) was the clear preference of 46 per cent of voters, the magazine team — from myself and creative director Suzanne Morin to circulation manager Nathalie Cuerrier and publisher André Préfontaine — all agreed that option one (above left), with just 22 per cent of votes, was the best bet for newsstand success.

The reasons? The dramatic green hue of the image, as well as the air of mystery it conveys. Plus, the image is actually one of our profile subject Ryan Harris (option two was another diver and not associated with Harris or his work), and we feel it’s important to be journalistically accurate, even on our cover. Here’s hoping our newsstand buyers agree with our call.
