Paper can be made from of any number of tree-free sources: cotton, banana waste, elephant poop — the list goes on. The real trick is affordable and eco-friendly mass production, so the paper is attractive to major suppliers. It speaks volumes, then, that Staples now stocks Winnipeg-based Prairie Paper’s “Step Forward Paper,” made from 80 per cent wheat straw waste and just 20 per cent recycled tree-based paper. Company co-founder and president Jeff Golfman, whose business partners include actor Woody Harrelson, has guided development of his revolutionary paper for more than 15 years and has big plans for the future.
